Speaker Spotlight: Monique Green

Monique Green

We had the amazing opportunity to sit down and discuss all things Public Speaking with Speak for Success member Monique Green.

Monique is the Senior Donor Relations Officer at VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation. She joined Speak for Success to brush up on her public speaking skills and practice techniques that would help her navigate the online and virtual aspects of public speaking.

You can read and watch her full interview below!

What did you enjoy most about training with Speak for Success?

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the training even though it was virtual it still felt really connected. The small group size also made the learning more personal and effective.

What was your goal when registering with Speak for Success and did you meet it?

My goal was to gain some confidence with my Public Speaking because I did feel a bit rusty. I also wanted to learn some best practices about virtual speaking because so much of my job had transitioned to Zoom and this little box is a whole new world. I definitely feel I was successful with both of those goals.

Since completing our workshop have you gone on to participate in any other public speaking opportunities? How did you feel about them?

I haven’t done any major public speaking but I do find I’m more comfortable giving presentations and find myself speaking up in meetings more which has been wonderful.

What would you say to someone who tends to get very nervous before a meeting or presentation?

I would simply say to prepare and practice…and then practice some more. The more confident you are in the material and how you want to express it will really help remove some of those nerves of the unknown.

What advice do you have for other emerging leaders who are just starting off on their public speaking journey?

My advice would be to be genuine, fake it till you make it can only take you so far, but being comfortable with yourself and your personality and owning your strengths and weaknesses I think is the best way you can really learn and grow.
